Iona monastery became one of the greatest Celtic center for learning, missionary activity, and book production. The Book of Kells may have been written here. The monastery fell prey to Viking attacks as early as 794. The monks that escaped are said to have brought St. Columba’s remains to Ireland along with the manuscript of the Book of Kells which is on display at Trinity College, Dublin. The Iona Community, a Christian community of men and women is based on the island. The island continues to be a popular destination for pilgrims.
